Welcome to the Brain Recovery Association
We are an international organization dedicated to advancing innovative neurorehabilitation for individuals living with the consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, and other neurological disorders.
Our mission is to to help the brain heal itself through precise, non-invasive brain stimulation.
At the heart of our work is the Brain Recovery Protocol, developed by Dr. Joseph Shafer.
Brain recovery does not just help patients manage their disability, the approach is specifically designed to help the brain rebuild damaged neural connections.
The protocol works in two clear steps
1. Precision Mapping: Transcranial vibration stimulation is used to pinpoint and identify specific areas
of the brain with connectivity problems.
2. Targeted Stimulation Triad: Once the area is mapped, an innovative, multimodal treatment is
applied directly to the previously mapped area. This approach brings together three non-invasive
stimuli—Transcranial Static Magnetic Stimulation (sTMS), Paired Associative Stimulation (PAS),
and somatosensory map activation—working together to deliver a highly focused, site-specific
stimulus to the injured region.
Advancing Our Research and Clinical Development
As part of our ongoing research and scientific advancement, a concept viability and feasibility study in
stroke rehabilitation related to the Brain Recovery Protocol has been recently submitted for publication.
While larger clinical trials lie ahead, these early findings establish a vital foundation for our continued
development.
Importantly, the study confirmed that the protocol can be safely applied in a clinical setting and
produced notable, consistent improvements in walking performance. These positive results persisted
even after patients were notified that their treatment sessions had concluded, pointing to genuine
functional recovery rather than temporary expectation effects.
Understanding Brain Injury
The brain can be injured by an external impact or by a stroke originating from an internal vascular condition.
Falls, sports activities, traffic accidents, or any blow causing the brain to move rapidly inside the skull can
result in significant neuronal damage.
Furthermore, we should no longer simply classify brain trauma as 'mild'. Even an injury initially considered
mild can lead to Persistent Post-Concussion Syndrome (PPCS), where symptoms linger for months or years.
Similarly, stroke disrupts normal neural communication, producing many of the same complex neurological
challenges.

Because these symptoms often vary greatly between individuals, recovery requires a personalized approach.
Our Approach
Recovery after a neurological injury is different for every individual.
The Brain Recovery Protocol begins by identifying the brain networks that appear to be functioning less efficiently. Once these areas have been identified, carefully targeted magnetic stimulation is combined with precisely timed peripheral sensory stimulation. The goal is to encourage the brain to strengthen existing pathways and create new functional connections through neuroplasticity.
